Production Tips
Don't be afraid to:
1. Make it sound grimy. It may not be pretty production sounding wise but some of the best hits have used this technique.
2. Sample something cheesy. Wrap it in your creativity retwist the shit and there it is.....new crack!
3. Keep EQ and effects to minimum. Better sounds less clutter.
4. Trust your ears. Where delay and whatnot may sound good on one track....don't feel obligated to use them.
5. Know and listen to music of different genres....that's how we expand.
6. Don't adhere to any one formula.
7. Let bass start before the kick....take it back to the old school!
8. Edit drum samples by sight and ear without zooming in.....good for training Young Padawan.
9. Reverse that kick drum and use a small part of it to lead into the main kick! Uuggh!
10. Play beats in using a drum pad and don't fully quantise but instead move the MIDI notes one by one.
11. Send MIDI notes of your drum pattern to wrong sampler or drum machine patch and check results. Never know what you could find.
12. Trying to analyze a loop? Throw it in your REX player (Reason) and and match up hits to MIDI notes and check the placement. Note how much difference tiny movements make.
13. Even once beat is complete....remove some sounds and see if you like it better.
14. If beat was constructed across a few channels but still ain't right...run it through one bus and compress it using an analogue plug-in.
